Enclosed is "Key" to this communication. What's that.
Only found it this morning when I went into my pocket for a car
ticket, and as I am not likely to require it for some time I thought
I had better return it. Trusting the deficiency of the one end of
my memory has not put you to any great inconvenience.

I wish I knew what he was talking about. Had he accidentally gone away with the key to her house? If so, were they already getting very close? The envelope was addressed to Miss J.E.McEwan, 353 Mance Street, M o n t r e a l.
On a whim, I checked what Google would bring up for 353 Mance Street. I only get a rooftop view, but the buildings look like they were built in the latter half of the 20th century, so I guess her home or apartment there had been torn down many years ago.
