And In between--Janet's First Letter

I think I wasn't very fastidious about filing these very early letters in order.  I think this is the letter to which James was responding on the YMCA camp stationery.

Note that the envelope is addressed to Mr. Jas. McSkimming; St Adolphe de Howard (via St. Agathe); Pro. Que

Here is the transcription.  WARNING:  A lot of this is somewhat petty and boring.

          August 19th 1910
          Friday 10 am
Dear Jim
I was beginning to realize the
truth of "Absence makes the heart
grow fonder" You see your letter
only reached me this morning
(Friday) so concluded that
well-- you know--Flossie
got your postal yesterday so
she had the laugh on me.
Never mind, some day you'll
be sorry, I'll get square too
              -2-
To begin where we left off--
we were cut off last Saturday
morning, I called up West [?]. 3059
immediately after but your
mother answered so I cut off--
you must have been at the
office--I was called about
15 times to the phone last
Saturday morning--Mr. Hart
2 times and he is going to
call me again to-day to see
if we will go to Iberville
to-morrow-- (If it is fine
we are going, won't you come too)
Flossie, Billy and I went up home
last Saturday all right, Baby
was in the best of humor,
he could not get away quick
enough, but by the time we
got near St. Timothee he
wanted to get off and walk.
Lawrence and another fellow were
at the station so Baby and
I drove home with Lawrence
and you know the rest--
Bill was very sentimental
driving home too, he kept
saying "Jennie look at the lovely
            -4-
moon (I cant spell lovely
the way he says it) Donald
was a little disappointed that
Mamie did not go but soon
got over it (All boys do)
Sunday we were kept busy
with the two of them  but
Bill says he is not going
home "eh Dono?"
We came home Sunday
night, Mamie met the train,
as she thought the children
might come back.
Monday worked hard
as usual, and just got home
               -5-
when Johnie called, then after
Mr Williams and his girl called
(the two who are so soon
to be married -- very foolish eh?)
Tuesday night Miss Ryan
and I went to see Miss Fraser
She is doing nicely but will not
be able to go home for about 2
weeks longer.  She was asking
for you.  Wednesday went to
bed about 8 pm and last
night-- F[lossie] and I were out
for the evening.  We were
invited to Osborne West's on
Elgin Ave.  There was a girl
                --6--
and fellow there made me
weary--all evening they sat
on a small sofa (saller than
the one at #353) and could
not see or hear anyother one,
and of course he had his arm
right around her, she seemed
to rather enjoy it and he
looked happy so there was
no need of the rest of us
kicking.
You will be thinking
I am writing my autobiography
but you know I have to tell
you something and I can't
tell you about the weather
             --7--
all the time although it poured
all day yesterday--That's what
The Best Maid is sick today
but I guess she will be all
right to-morrow.
I am writing this in the office
and have been interrupted several
times--Dr Cook has just been
in looking at me--You
see if I waited until tonight
you would not get it until
Monday and i want it to go
out at 4 today so as you
will get it to-morrow and answer
Sunday--please note
             --8--
Say, honest are you lonesome
for Montreal?  [????] for
instance!
So there are pretty girls up
there--I told you to be
careful of you heart--Do
you really think I'd stand any
show up there?  Anyway, it
is a week ago tonight since
"we parted at the door" and
we change with time--thats
true--
Expect to have a big time
with Willie to-morrow--
Guess I might as well
              --9--
Intend going up home next
Friday night--for my week.
So be sure and write so as
it will reach here before Friday
as I would not care to have
a letter lying around here all
the time I'm away.  If you
are too busy, that will be
all right--perhaps.
I want to tell you this
is some paper I have had
in my desk for about a year
and this is all I have (I spoiled
the other half of this page)
If I had more I would keep on
            --10--
writing for a long time--
never mind next time I
write I'll be good and it
may not take you so long
to read it. (and it may)
I am very sorry you have a cold
but as Mother has been
away for 2 weeks my suply
of handkerchiefs is about out
therefore I will be unable to
comply with your request.
suppose there is no chance
of your coming home next
Saturday and coming up home
over sunday--------
Hope you are still enjoying
yourself        I am
your sincere Friend
                   Jennie

Along the upper margin of p. 9, Jennie wrote (sideways):
I did not get the gist of the way you finished your letter--Pls explain
