Kisses from Exile

Clearly, Jim is getting more comfortable with Jennie and more "forward"!  I sure wish I had letters between these in February 1911 and what came before in the summer of 1910!  I wonder what Jennie saw that Jimmy didn't want her to see again.  Is this a reference to his illness or to some family unpleasantness?  Jim's writing is so clear that I may not necessarily post printed versions of what he wrote.  I think it's redundant.  He must have been quite a valued employee, that his employers would hold his job for him despite the time he missed for his illness.

My dear Jennie,
Had it struck me for one moment that I was "laid past" for another week I would certainly have dropped you a note sooner.  Every morning saw me making an attempt to get to the office but it was not to be and here I am still in durance vile.  However, doc says if I walk up to his instructions and take my medicine he will make me right for Monday.
I would have asked you down tomorrow (Saturday) night, but do not want you to see again what you saw last Saturday and chances are that it might be worse owing to a certain day of the month having fallen this week.  If all goes well, however, I think, I will be permitted to take a car ride on Sunday afternoon and will make Mance Street the turn around point.  It will be necessary, in order to minimize the fatigue of my first outing, to stay awhile at the turn around point--comprenez!  I guess it will be pretty early, about 3.00 pm, when your humble will arrive, so dont go to bed.  This early arrival is made necessary by the fact that i will have to leave early also--about 4-30 pm.  Dont forget eh!  If this will not be convenient for you, you can telephone Tom before he leaves tomorrow.
What is this that has come to my knowledge

You inviting my brother to a snowshoe tramp without even hinting to me that such a thing was to take place.  I will take this matter up with you personally on my return to where?
Your pretty Valentine came duly to hand and  helped to make things a little brighter, but gee! I have had a swell time.
I hope you have been having a good time since I saw you last and that you have had time to give me a passing thought once in awhile.
They are telling me if I want this posted tonight I had better quit, so goodbye until  Sunday.
           Yours in exile
                                    Jim
