Summer 1912--Laurentian Lodge, Val Morin

There are many more letters coming.  For the second half of the year it appears that Jim and Jennie hung onto most of their correspondence to each other.

Jim writes from Montreal, where he continues to work for the Canadian Stewart Company, Limited.  Amazingly, it's possible to find this company listed in the 1915 edition of the predecessor of Standard & Poor's, and there's even a reference in a couple of stray pieces of business correspondence in my collection to one of the directors of the James Stewart Company, a Mr. Franson.   My guess is that this sort of work suited him far better than the railroad work he had been doing previously.

Here's the first of the letters.  Jimmy writes to Jennie who is on vacation at the Laurentian Lodge in Val Morin.  I'm not sure if it is the same place, but there is still a Laurentian Lodge in Val Morin.  I'll have to see if any of the photos from Grammy match the building you can see in the link above.  I remember many stories from my mother about skiing in the Laurentians in the 1930's with her good friends and her cousins.

The creases in the paper make it difficult to read a couple of the lines:
"...felt lucky at arriving back in Montreal still the proud possessor of one hundred bucks.

and

"...but will promise a long one for tomorrow.
Hoping that you are becoming acquainted and enjoying your vacation"

It's strange dropping into the middle of a conversation like this without much context.  I have no clue what the story is with Arthur paying Flora's fare, and Jim (?) still having $100, which was a month or two of salary for most men in that day.

Did you notice: "But never mind, Sweetheart.  Someday you and me will have one long grand holiday."  I read this and I can hear Scotland in the voice of the writer!  Are they secretly engaged? Have they talked about marriage by now?
